About Civic Data Atlas

Civic Data Atlas brings comprehensive demographic data to local political districts.

For states and congressional districts, demographic information is readily available on official census.gov websites, along with many third-party sites that make it more accessible.

However, the same info isn’t availible for local government. That is not because there is no demand. It is because of how Census data is released. The Census publishes ready-made tabulations for states, congressional districts, and state legislative districts, so those profiles can be built directly from published tables.

The Census does not directly publish equivalent tables for local political districts. Producing them requires collecting local district geographic boundaries, aggregating data from smaller Census geographies, and addressing imperfect boundary overlap. Our approach is detailed on the Methodology page.

We provide comprehensive district-level information on the following topics:

  • Population: race and ethnicity, age distribution
  • Immigration: nativity, citizenship status, country of origin, year of arrival
  • Economics: household income, poverty status, employment
  • Housing: vacancy rates, housing type, cost burden, heating source, tenure
  • Transportation: commute mode, travel time, vehicle access
  • Education: educational attainment
  • Technology: computer and internet access
  • Health: insurance coverage, disability status {.about-topic-list}

This data is intended to help elected officials understand their constituents, journalists and policy analysts contextualize local issues, and advocates show how specific problems affect specific districts.
